This is a wiki how article on making your cats happy. Just thought I would include this.
If you are like any pet owner, you always want your pets to behappy. Just like humans, cats strive to be happy; here are a few ways to help your cat find happiness. Remember, don't over do these things as your cat may feel uncomfortable or unhappy. Good luck!
EditSteps
- 1Petting Your Cat: Some cats have different preferences than others, so some might like to be scratched while others like to be left alone until they feel they want human affection.
- 2Protection: For their safety it is sometimes essential for your cat to be an indoor cat (e.g. if your cat is a rare breed and could be stolen or has a medical condition). All cats, indoors or out must have plenty of toys and human attention. Also (if possible) the companionship of another animal may be beneficial (another cat is ideal, though a new kitten can upset older cats). This can help to keep your cat busy when you cannot be at home. It is also important that you have your cats vaccinated as this will prevent them picking up diseases from the outside world once they start going outside. Vaccines are harmless and given by a veterinarian roughly every 6 months.
- 3Feeding: Give your cat a consistent diet as sudden changes might upset their delicate stomach. Dry food can have all the nutrients your cat will need and will help to keep teeth strong and clean, though with dry cat food products care should be taken to ensure fresh water is always available. Give your cat a treat once in a while, but don't over do it as this can lead to problems including weight gain and "fussy eating habits". Also, human food is not beneficial to a cats diet.
- 4Freedom: While your cat is sleeping, try to avoid waking it up, especially if they are kittens as this is when they do most of their growing. When allowing your cat outside you should ensure your animal is microchipped, this will help people to reunite you with your pet should anything happen or the cat become lost. If you have just moved house and plan on letting your cat outside, you should keep him/her indoors for at least 6 weeks. Kittens should not be let outside til the age of at least 6 months after they have been spayed/neutered. It would also be in your pets interest if you did not let him/her outside if you live on a busy road or where they would be likely to be struck by a vehicle.
- 5Relationship: A positive relationship with their owners is crucial to a cat's emotional well being. Discipline with a squirt bottle can alienate your cat and make it nervous around people. With cats the best form of discipline is prevention and every care should be taken to avoid "bad habits". To ensure this scratching posts should be provided and the litter box should always be clean. If you move house or your cat becomes stressed it is a good idea to give him/her their own space, a quiet room that is not often used, with access to a litter tray is ideal.
- 6Entertainment: When you are unable to be with your cat a radio with soft music such as classical music can help them to relax but any talk show will help your cat feel like somebody is home. Most cats cope extremely well on their own, that is what makes them an ideal pet for somebody who works long hours. If you are considering getting a new kitten, you should always consider getting two from the same litter as they will have bonded and will keep each other company. Though two kittens from different litters will bond if they are introduced at a young age. Cat toys are readily available at any pet shop and most supermarkets for very little money. These can give your pet hours of entertainment and help prevent boredom.
- 7Litter: Change litter regularly, as cats do not like using dirty litter boxes. They are very clean animals and appreciate clean toilet facilities as much as we do. Some cats prefer different types of litter in my experience. If your cat is used to one specific type of litter it is a good idea to stick to it. This will also prevent soiling in the home.
- 8Love: Make sure that you spend quality time with your cat. This can help you to relax as much as it can your pet. It will be beneficial to both of you and help you to bond with each other. Try to keep your cat in a routine, as all animals love a routine, it helps to make them feel secure and stable in the environment you provide for them.
- 9Health: Have your cat spayed or neutered. Doing this will make your cat healthy and happy, it will also make your pet less likely to contract some diseases such as the feline HIV virus (this cannot be passed on to humans!). Go to a good veterinarian. If you can, go to one recommended by a friend or the person you purchased your cat/kitten from. Keep up to date with vaccinations. Regular worming and flea treatments are essential, especially if your cat spends time outdoors and is likely to pick up these common parasites.
- 10Freedom: If your cat is an indoor cat, it is normal for your cat to want to eat grass, a special type of cat grass can be grown indoors for your pet. This is better for any cat (even outdoor cats) as it helps the digestive system and doesn't cause vomiting that garden grass can induce.
- 11Cats love freedom so they would like to live somewhere wide and open. If you live somewhere where this is not possible or you own a cat that is a rare breed and could be stolen or a cat that needs medication, some people build an outdoor pen for their pets. It is best to equip the area with branches and scratching posts for them to play on. Cats should never be kept in these constantly and an area of shelter should always be provided, as well as access to fresh water. It is best to only let them out into the pen in the daytime. If you want to do this remember that cats are brilliant climbers and it should be checked and fully secured before you let your pet into it.
- 12Hunting: It is normal for your cat to catch birds, insects, mice and other wildlife. It is not fair to punish your cat for this as they are only displaying natural behavior.
